Review: LexPhil’s Music Director, Scott Terrell, to Conduct Arizona Opera, Philadelphia Orchestra, and Aspen Music Festival and School
LEXINGTON, KY – Lexington Philharmonic proudly announces multiple guest conducting engagements for Music Director and Conductor, Scott Terrell. Terrell will serve as Guest Conductor for the Arizona Opera during their new production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte), staged by Dan Rigazzi of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The production is an anachronistic nod to the world of steam punk, also drawing inspiration from the art of surrealist painter René Magritte. Arizona Opera’s production will run Friday, February 27 through Sunday, March 1 at Symphony Hall in Phoenix before moving to Tucson the following weekend.
On choosing Terrell, Ryan Taylor, Arizona Opera General Director, stated: “we have assembled a sharp cast of brilliant young musicians to perform the roles on stage, and selected Scott for his strong leadership and his ability to construct the tempi of the performances with the heartbeat of each character in mind. We’re pleased that Scott will contribute his considerable talents to that end with these performances in both Phoenix and Tucson.”
Music Director and Conductor Scott Terrell brought LexPhil’s first opera production to fruition in 2013 with Ástor Piazzolla’s tango opera María de Buenos Aires. In August 2015, he will return to the Aspen Music Festival and School to conduct a concert version of María de Buenos Aires. Baritone Luis Alejandro Orozco will reprise the role of El Payador in María de Buenos Aires which he first performed with the Lexington Philharmonic in 2013.
“Scott has introduced a new way of experiencing opera to our regional audiences that has had a huge impact on audience excitement and expectation,” says Allison Kaiser, Lexington Philharmonic Executive Director. The inclusion of unique presentations of opera continues later this year with LexPhil’s presentation of Osvaldo Golijov’s Ainadamar – Fountain of Tears at the Lexington Opera House on Friday, April 17, 2014 and Saturday, April 18, 2014. Ainadamar- Fountain of Tears is the first collaboration between LexPhil and Kentucky Opera, and will also feature the talents of students from University of Kentucky Opera Theatre.
In addition to opera, Music Director and Conductor Scott Terrell will conduct multiple programs with the Philadelphia Orchestra, including an outreach concert at the Reading Terminal on March 9, 2015. Following this concert, he will serve as cover conductor for two weeks of programs that include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 and Holst’s The Planets. Terrell has previously engaged with Philadelphia Orchestra as cover conductor for Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin in Yannick’s Eroica, a program featuring Beethoven’s Eroica presented at Verizon Hall in Philadelphia (February 20, 22, 23, 2014) and Carnegie Hall in New York City (February 21, 2014). In October 2014, he returned to Philadelphia to cover in Mahler’s Resurrection, a program featuring Mahler’s Symphony No.2, also presented at Verizon Hall (October 30, November 1 & 2, 2014) and Carnegie Hall in New York City (October 31, 2014).
Since his appointment as Music Director and Conductor for the Lexington Philharmonic in 2009, Scott Terrell has maintained a healthy schedule of guest conducting with many renowned orchestral institutions across the United States and around the world. He has engaged with Colorado Symphony, Opera Colorado, Minnesota Opera, Minnesota Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Milwaukee Symphony, Aspen Music Festival and Spoleto Festival.
